O'Neil was a contestant on the third season of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. The singer made it through to the top tier of contestants when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She suffered significant losses in the top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed into the bottom three and the bottom two spots, respectively. The judges were shocked by this, and told the audience the fact that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performance was so impressive that she didn't even make it to the lower three in the future. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7, 2005, when O'Neil advanced into the final two of the contest. Werner reportedly forecast that morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially announced by Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
